Film Academy Offers Apology to Sacheen Littlefeather, Who Declined Brando’s Oscar, on One-Year Anniversary

August 15, 2022 marks the one-year anniversary of a significant event in Oscar history. On this day, Sacheen Littlefeather, who gained fame for rejecting Marlon Brando’s Oscar for “The Godfather” in 1973, will be embraced by the Motion Picture Academy. The Academy has officially apologized to her and invited her to a special healing event at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures.

When Littlefeather took the stage at Brando’s request, she made a powerful statement about the mistreatment of Native Americans by the film industry. However, her actions were met with disdain and personal attacks on her heritage, ultimately ending her acting career.

In an effort to make amends, David Rubin, the outgoing president of the Academy, sent Littlefeather a letter on June 18, expressing his apologies for the injustices she faced. He acknowledged the lasting impact of her courageous stand and the need for respect and human dignity in the industry.

As a continuation of this reconciliation, the Academy has organized a special program on September 17 at the Academy Museum. This event aims to foster conversation, reflection, healing, and celebration. It will include performances by Native American artists, a dialogue between Littlefeather and producer Bird Runningwater, and a reading of the Academy’s apology letter.

Rubin emphasized the Academy’s commitment to representation and inclusion for indigenous voices, acknowledging the essential role they play in the global film community.

In response, Littlefeather expressed her gratitude for the Academy’s apology and highlighted the importance of maintaining a sense of humor as a means of survival. She shared her disbelief and joy at witnessing this program come to fruition, especially with the participation of talented Native performers and the guidance of Bird Runningwater.

The event will be attended by both Rubin and incoming Academy President Janet Yang, symbolizing the Academy’s dedication to this reconciliation process.
