The sale of chicken made from animal cells has been approved by US regulators for the first time. This decision allows California companies Upside Foods and Good Meat to offer “lab-grown” meat to restaurants and potentially to supermarket shelves. The Agriculture Department granted approval for federal inspections required to sell meat and poultry in the US. The US Food and Drug Administration also declared that products from both companies are safe for consumption. Upside Foods produces large sheets of meat that are then shaped into chicken cutlets and sausages, while Good Meat turns chicken cells into various forms such as cutlets, nuggets, shredded meat, and satays. However, the cost of cultivated chicken is currently higher than traditional meat and production on a large scale is not yet possible. Therefore, these products will initially be served in exclusive restaurants, including Bar Crenn in San Francisco and a restaurant in Washington, DC. It is important to note that the cultivated meat produced by these companies is not a substitute for meat, unlike products from companies like Impossible Foods and Beyond Meat. Over 150 companies globally are working on creating meat from cells, including pork, lamb, fish, and beef. The industry faces challenges, such as the perception of an “ick factor.”
