A trial date of March 4, 2024, has been set for Donald Trump in the federal case in Washington. Trump is being charged with attempting to overturn the results of the 2020 election. The defense requested to push the trial back until April 2026, but US District Judge Tanya Chutkan denied the request. The trial will now take place later than the proposed January date from special counsel Jack Smith’s team. Judge Chutkan emphasized the importance of a prompt and efficient resolution to this matter, stating that the public has a right to it. If the date remains, the trial will occur in the midst of the Republican presidential nominating calendar and the day before Super Tuesday.
Earlier this month, Trump was charged with scheming to undo his loss to Joe Biden in the 2020 election. This federal election subversion prosecution is one of four criminal cases against Trump. Additionally, Trump is facing a separate federal case where he has been accused by Smith’s team of illegally retaining classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago property and refusing to return them. This particular case is scheduled for trial on May 20 next year. Trump is also currently dealing with state cases in New York and Georgia. Prosecutors in Manhattan have charged Trump with falsifying business records in relation to a hush money payment to a porn actor who claimed to have had an extramarital affair with him. Similarly, prosecutors in Fulton County, Georgia, have charged Trump and 18 others in a racketeering conspiracy aimed at overturning the state’s 2020 election.
Recently, Trump surrendered in the Georgia case and posed for the first mugshot in American history of a former US president. As the early frontrunner for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, Trump believes these investigations are politically motivated and an attempt to hinder his chances of winning back the White House.
