FBI Nabs Suspect Identified by Jan. 6 Online Investigators in Arresting Turn of Events

An Indiana man who law enforcement officials say played a significant role in the violent events that unfolded at the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, has finally been apprehended after online sleuths identified him and alerted the FBI. Gregory Mijares, 41, was arrested on Friday and now faces charges of felony civil disorder and two misdemeanors, according to NBC News. Due to his distinctive choice of headwear during the incident, Mijares has gained the nickname “Gas Hat.”

Prosecutors allege that Mijares was among the first rioters to pursue retreating officers into the lower west terrace tunnel of the Capitol, as reported by The Hill. It is further claimed that Mijares forcibly opened the previously locked doors, granting the mob unimpeded access after other rioters had shattered the glass panes. Prior to this, Mijares directed an obscene gesture at the officers and engaged in physical altercations with them, according to the FBI. Affidavits also state that Mijares has admitted to many of the charges, including assaulting law enforcement officers. Prosecutors assert that he was involved in two additional encounters with the police line. Thus far, over 600 out of the 1,100 individuals arrested by the FBI in connection with the Capitol attack have been convicted and sentenced. (Learn more about the Capitol riot.)
