Two individuals tragically lost their lives on Wednesday in a fatal accident involving a single-engine Cessna airplane at Van Nuys Airport.
The Los Angeles Fire Department promptly responded to the incident, dispatching firefighters to the 16300 block of West Waterman Drive at 10:37 a.m., according to official reports.
“At Van Nuys Airport, a small single-engine aircraft crashed and immediately caught fire,” stated the LAFD. “Our fire crews worked swiftly to extinguish the flames, but sadly, both occupants aboard the aircraft were found deceased.”
As of now, the identities of the two individuals have not been released.
LAFD Captain Erik Scott shared during a news briefing that the plane made a “nose first” impact with the ground, resulting in a highly violent crash.
Responding firefighters from a nearby station swiftly arrived at the scene and employed foam to combat the intense flames fueled by aviation fuel, said Scott.
Airport Police Captain Karla Rodriguez informed reporters that an airport police officer witnessed the crash from a short distance away.
While Runway 16-R was temporarily closed for approximately 30 minutes, runway 16-L remained operational, ensuring minimal disruption to airport activities, noted Rodriguez.
“A CSA SportCruiser, a single-engine aircraft, crashed at Van Nuys Airport in Los Angeles around 10:40 a.m. local time on Wednesday, August 2,” reported the Federal Aviation Administration.
“There were two individuals on board,” added the FAA. “Both the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will launch an investigation. The NTSB will spearhead the inquiry and provide further updates.”
