A 26-year-old man convicted for fatally shooting an acquaintance in Santa Ana over a dispute involving his girlfriend.
Carlos Alexander Gonzalez, convicted of first-degree murder and discharge of a firearm at an occupied car, now faces a potential prison sentence of 50 years to life.
Gonzalez’s conviction stems from the shooting of 20-year-old Bryan Anthony Steubing Jr. of Santa Ana on May 19, 2018, at 3109 S. Main St.
The victim, seated in the passenger seat of a car, was shot multiple times by Gonzalez following a growing animosity between the two over an incident with Gonzalez’s girlfriend, Jolene Lopez.
Prior to the shooting, Steubing was stabbed by Gonzalez, but chose not to report the incident out of fear of retaliation.
Gonzalez had accused Steubing of attempting to sexually assault his girlfriend, a claim that Steubing denied.
The day of the shooting, surveillance footage captured Steubing and a friend encountering Lopez at a gas station, but there was no interaction between the three.
Lopez later confirmed her presence in the footage to the police but refused to provide further details without legal representation.
A friend of Lopez’s mother informed the police about efforts made by a group of friends to cover up the shooting.
Gonzalez, who had multiple other pending cases for robbery and drug possession, allegedly told the friend that he had shot Steubing for “messing with Jolene.”
It is worth noting that Lopez had previously pleaded guilty to assault with force likely to produce great bodily injury and was sentenced to 60 days in jail in connection with one of the robberies associated with Gonzalez.
