Following the congressional vote to oust Rep. George Santos (R-N.Y.), the U.S. House wasted no time in taking action by swiftly dispatching a worker to change the locks on his office. A C-SPAN camera captured the speedy removal of the lock from Santos’ former workplace in the Longworth House Office Building. The walls outside the office were adorned with posters depicting Israeli hostages in the Gaza Strip, while a glimpse inside revealed a tidy desk adorned with fresh flowers and a framed photograph of Santos alongside a large American flag.
Santos hastily departed Capitol Hill in a black SUV after being ousted from his position, cutting short his 11-month term. As he left, he delivered a brief statement to reporters, expressing his disdain for the situation.
Elected with 54% of the vote in New York’s 3rd Congressional District, Santos’ dishonesty about his background and inflated resume only came to light after the election, and the full extent is still unfolding. Both Democrat and Republican members of Congress struggled with the decision to remove him from office amidst a string of embarrassing deceptions. Additionally, Santos is facing federal criminal charges related to his alleged mismanagement of campaign funds.
A scathing House Ethics Committee report further diminished support for Santos, ultimately resulting in him being just the sixth member of Congress ever to be expelled.
