Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis once again rebuked House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) on Wednesday, denouncing his persistent efforts to involve himself in the prosecution of former President Donald Trump as “ignorant,” “troubling,” and an abuse of power.
“Your lack of knowledge regarding the United States and Georgia Constitutions and codes is one possible explanation for your correspondence,” Willis wrote in a letter to the lawmaker. “However, a more troubling explanation is that you are misusing your authority as Chairman of the Committee on the Judiciary to obstruct and interfere with a criminal prosecution in Georgia.”
“We have already addressed the legal positions you have put forward in a previous letter, which I have attached for your reference,” she continued. “The contents of your latest letter do not alter the fact that your positions lack merit.”
Willis and Jordan have been engaged in a war of words for months since the district attorney indicted Trump and 18 others as part of an extensive racketeering investigation, alleging that the former president and his associates conspired to overturn the 2020 presidential election results in Georgia.
Jordan, a vocal supporter of Trump who chairs the influential Judiciary Committee, demanded that Willis hand over various documents related to the case. In response, she accused the lawmaker of attempting to “intrude” and “interfere” with an ongoing criminal investigation.
“Your letter clearly demonstrates your lack of understanding of the law, legal practice, and the ethical obligations of attorneys and prosecutors,” she wrote last month.
Yet Jordan reiterated his request for documents a few weeks later, accusing Willis of prioritizing her own fame and a political agenda over fair and just administration of the law.
The district attorney did not back down.
“While you may enjoy immunity under the United States Constitution’s Speech or Debate Clause, that does not make your behavior any less offensive to the rule of law,” she wrote on Wednesday, suggesting that Jordan focus on other issues that would benefit the American people. “I encourage you to direct your attention to those matters, which would improve the lives of the American people.”
