Family Defines Shooting of a Gay Woman, 24, as a Fatal Hate Crime.

The community of Texas is mourning the tragic loss of 24-year-old Akira Ross, allegedly shot and killed by a stranger who shouted gay slurs at her. On June 2 in Cedar Park, a suburb of Austin, Ross had stopped for gas with her girlfriend and a friend when a man yelled anti-gay slurs at her, according to her girlfriend’s account. After continuing to harass her, 23-year-old Bradley Stanford opened fire, killing Ross while she was pumping gas. Stanford was arrested two days later and charged with first-degree murder. Though it is unclear whether hate was the motivation for the killing, Ross’s father believes it was a hate crime. Ross’s family and friends remembered her love for music, particularly hip-hop, and her warm personality. In a show of support, a gay couple who had bought a car from Ross’s father set up a GoFundMe page to help with funeral expenses. The family has planned a balloon release ceremony in Austin to honor Ross’s memory.
