June 28 (UPI) — Fall Out Boy has recorded an updated version of the Billy Joel hit “We Didn’t Start the Fire.” The rock band released a cover of the song on Wednesday with updated lyrics referencing significant events from 1989 to 2023.
Billy Joel originally released the song in 1989, with lyrics that highlighted important events and people from 1949 to 1989, such as Elvis Presley and the Watergate scandal.
The new version includes references to MySpace, Pokémon, and Harry Potter, among other cultural touchstones.
“I was always fascinated by this song when I was younger. It captured the essence of important moments and individuals throughout history, some of which faded away while others left a lasting impact. So much has happened in the past 34 years, and we thought it would be fun to give the song a little update. We hope you enjoy our take on it…” Fall Out Boy wrote on Instagram.
Fall Out Boy will be releasing a limited edition 7-inch vinyl version of the song, with only 5,000 copies available.
The band’s eighth studio album, “So Much (for) Stardust,” was released in March, and Fall Out Boy is currently on the “So Much (for) Stardust” tour, with their next performance scheduled for Friday in Phoenix.
