LAKE FOREST, Ill. — Bears head coach Matt Eberflus made a surprising announcement at Halas Hall on Wednesday. Instead of discussing new defensive end Montez Sweat, Eberflus fired running backs coach David Walker. The decision was made due to Walker’s failure to meet the organization’s standards, both on and off the field. This marks the second departure from Eberflus’ coaching staff this season, with defensive coordinator Alan Williams resigning for “personal reasons.”
Sources have confirmed that Walker was dismissed due to human resource issues. Eberflus, who sees himself as the CEO of the team, takes responsibility for the decisions made regarding his coaching staff.
Despite the turmoil, Eberflus maintains that the culture in Chicago is strong. He points to the team’s 2-2 record over the past four weeks as evidence that things are on the right track.
While Eberflus is disheartened by the issues that led to Walker’s dismissal, he believes that adversity can make the team stronger. He insists that he has not lost the trust of his players or staff due to the actions taken.
Omar Young will step in as the new running backs coach as the Bears prepare to face the New Orleans Saints in Week 9.
During the press conference, Eberflus faced minimal questions about the team’s recent acquisition, Montez Sweat, and no questions about quarterback Justin Fields or cornerback Jaylon Johnson. This lack of interest reflects the current state of the team under Eberflus’ leadership.
