Rich travelers are eagerly reserving spots on Italy’s newest luxury train, “La Dolce Vita,” even before its construction is complete — and it’s easy to see why.
The luxury train offers overnight suites for two people that range from 6,600 euros (approximately $7,400) to 25,000 euros (approximately $28,000) per night. La Dolce Vita is a modern reinterpretation of the famous Orient Express rail service that operated in Europe from 1883 to 1977.
Similar to a cruise, La Dolce Vita offers leisurely journeys with stops in various destinations such as Rome, Venice, Sicily, and Tuscany, allowing passengers to explore.
The train is scheduled to launch at the end of 2024, offering curated two-day and three-day journeys. Travelers can choose from eight itineraries, including visits to Tuscany’s wine vineyards, the coast of Sicily, and historic and cultural sites in cities like Rome, Venice, and Palermo.
All meals, beverages, and excursions are included in the ticket price, following the lead of the cruise industry. Guests will also have access to Orient Express hotels in Rome and Venice, set to open in late 2024 and 2025.
Rebirth of Train Travel
Despite the train sets still being under construction in Brindisi, Italy, enough people have already pre-registered for La Dolce Vita, resulting in full availability for 2024, as reported by Bloomberg in July.
By placing a 500 euro deposit during the pre-sale period, customers secure a spot on the priority list for 2024 and 2025 departure dates, with availability dependent on traveler preferences, according to Jessaline Fynbo, Orient Express’ Senior Marketing Manager.
The renewed popularity of a century-old brand and mode of transportation is a testament to the recent revival of train travel. Pinterest searches for terms like “interrailing Europe aesthetic” and “train trip aesthetic” have increased significantly, making train travel a prominent trend forecasted for 2023.
The resurgence of train travel is attributed, in part, to its lower carbon footprint, as environmentally conscious younger generations and high-spending travelers factor sustainability into their vacation plans. Additionally, the comfort and aesthetic appeal of La Dolce Vita’s lavish design contribute to its allure.
“The Orient Express La Dolce Vita is an ode to Italian seduction,” reads a brochure for the train. “It evokes a unique art of living where a carefree attitude reigns.”
In other words, trains are undeniably captivating.
