Expert Says Bryan Johnson’s $37 ‘Longevity’ Olive Oil Isn’t Worth the Price

  • Longevity-obsessed tech executive Bryan Johnson is offering a bottle of extra virgin olive oil for $37. The unique selling point of this product is its supposed ability to support health and longevity.
  • However, an expert in olive oil has stated that the ingredients in this product do not appear to differ from other high-quality oils available at a lower price point.

Longevity-obsessed tech executive Bryan Johnson is selling a bottle of extra virgin olive oil for $37.50. However, an expert in olive oil has stated that it appears no different from other fresh and high-quality oils available at a lower price point.

Olive oil is known for its health benefits. Braintree founder, Bryan Johnson, who spends $2 million per year on anti-aging treatments, claims that his Blueprint Premium Extra Virgin Olive Oil is specifically designed to promote health and longevity. It is available for purchase on his website at $75.00 for two bottles.

Johnson, 45 years old, boasts a heart comparable to that of a 37-year-old and lung capacity akin to an 18-year-old thanks to his “biohacking” experiment called Project Blueprint. He follows a detailed protocol on his website, consuming three tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil daily.

In a YouTube video shared on June 14, Johnson revealed that extra virgin olive oil accounts for 15% of his daily caloric intake.

Regarding Blueprint olive oil, Johnson stated, “we have discovered through scientific evidence that the specific type of extra virgin olive oil you consume greatly influences the health benefits you receive.

“We have sourced olive oil from both hemispheres of the planet. The challenges we faced in solving this ourselves led us to source and create a brand that is now available to you.”

According to the Blueprint website, the olive oil contains higher levels of polyphenolic compounds, natural minerals, and vitamins that enhance cardiometabolic health.

Experts have not found a strong connection between olive oil quality and price

Evidence suggests that consuming polyphenols, found naturally in plants, is associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, making it a key contributor to the heart health benefits attributed to olive oil. Richard Hoffman, an associate lecturer of nutritional biochemistry at the University of Hertfordshire, UK, wrote for The Conversation.

However, Dr. Selina Wang, an olive oil expert and associate professor in the Department of Food Science and Technology at the University of California, Davis, stated that after reviewing the ingredients list of Blueprint olive oil on Johnson’s website, she did not notice any distinguishing features compared to other fresh and high-quality extra virgin olive oils available at a lower price.

Wang commented that the levels of phenolics in Blueprint oil are “decent,” and the levels of oleic acid, which is linked to good heart health, are average compared to most olive oils. However, Blueprint olive oil meets the criteria for being classified as a fresh and high-quality extra virgin olive oil.

Wang and her research team, who have studied olive oil quality, have not discovered a strong correlation between price and quality. She advises consumers to purchase fresh oil and consume it as soon as possible to maximize its health benefits, as antioxidants in olive oil diminish over time and are believed to protect against certain diseases.

Registered dietitian Nichola Ludlam-Raine suggested that unless someone is a multimillionaire or billionaire with an excess of funds, it would be best to forego purchasing this expensive olive oil. She emphasized that the majority of one’s diet has the greatest impact on overall health. Ludlam-Raine recommends patients buy regular olive oil from the grocery store and allocate more funds towards purchasing fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and other sources of healthy fats, micronutrients, protein, and fiber.

Insider reached out to Blueprint for comment, but received no response.

Johnson spends $2 million per year on reversing his ‘biological age’

In addition to consuming olive oil, Johnson employs various methods to “hack” his “biological age,” including consuming 100 pills daily and receiving shockwave therapy for “penis rejuvenation” three times a week.

The medical community holds differing opinions on the definition of “biological age” compared to chronological age.

The National Institute on Aging stated in 2021: “Biological age means the true age that our cells, tissues, and organ systems appear to be, based on biochemistry.”

Research indicates that olive oil possesses anti-aging properties

Eating olive oil offers genuine benefits, making it a staple in the Mediterranean Diet, widely considered the healthiest way to eat.

One study suggests that the fats in olive oil activate cellular pathways associated with increased longevity.

According to the American Heart Association, consuming over half a tablespoon of olive oil daily is associated with a 15% lower risk of cardiovascular disease. Another extensive study found that regular olive oil consumption is linked to a significantly lower risk of death from dementia.

Ludlam-Raine recommends using two types of olive oil: extra virgin or cold-pressed for drizzling on pastas and salads, and a refined version, typically yellow in color, for cooking. The latter is more stable under high heat and does not smoke or become rancid during cooking.

However, Ludlam-Raine advises against consuming large quantities of olive oil, as it is still a source of fat. She stated, “Just one tablespoon of olive oil contains around 120 calories, which can really add up if consumed in large amounts.”
