During my short visit to Toronto, I had the pleasure of experiencing some amazing places that I highly recommend for first-time visitors. Let me take you on a whirlwind tour of these hidden gems!
First on the list is Beavertails, a Canadian specialty that shouldn’t be missed. Introduced to us by Philippine Ambassador to Canada Maria Andrelita ‘Meian’ Austria and Toronto Consul General Angie Escalona, Beavertails are deep-fried dough pastries shaped like a beaver’s tail. These delightful treats, sprinkled with cinnamon (and available in chocolate and other flavors), are reminiscent of the Filipino dish maruya. You can easily find them at street stalls.
For an exciting foodie adventure, head to Kensington, a vibrant and trendy neighborhood. Gino Khoury, a well-known local, recommends a visit to Grey Gardens, a stylish restaurant listed in the Michelin Guide Bib Gourmand. Their menu boasts an impressive array of dishes, including fresh oysters, exquisite house-made pastas, and a mouthwatering spaghetti with a mackerel-based twist. The culinary experience at Grey Gardens is truly unforgettable.
Another restaurant to keep an eye on is Milo’s, a famous Greek establishment originally from Montreal. Known for their outstanding tzatziki and delicate fried zucchini tower, Milo’s is a must-visit for Greek cuisine enthusiasts. Their fresh and perfectly cooked fish, accompanied by their divine olive oil, is a treat for the senses. Shinette Khoury, the talented home chef and expert in Lebanese cuisine, highly recommends their crab cakes. Keep in mind that Estiatorio Milos will open its doors in Toronto in 2024.
If you’re looking for a unique grocery store experience, Loblaws is a dream come true. With an extensive selection of cheeses from around the world and a dedicated wine area on the second floor, this store has everything you need. Don’t forget to grab some maple syrup as a delightful souvenir. The store even provides tables where you can enjoy your deli food right away. My personal favorite branch is located near the Holiday Inn Downtown.
For those seeking a sophisticated and elegant atmosphere, the Library Bar at the Fairmont Royal York is the place to be. Its luxurious ambiance is beautifully complemented by its menu, which pays homage to poetry and literature. From their signature cocktail, inspired by Percy Bysshe Shelley’s quote on poetry, to their drink named after Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy, every sip is an exquisite experience. Make sure to try their signature martini with their unique gin. And if you’re lucky, you might meet Christine, a friendly Filipina bartender who adds warmth to the already charming ambiance.
Although I didn’t have the chance to experience it myself, I was told that the best dining experience in Toronto can be found at the revolving restaurant of the CN Tower called 360 The Restaurant at CN Tower. Situated a towering 350 meters above ground, this revolving restaurant offers stunning panoramic views of the city. It’s definitely a dining experience that shouldn’t be missed.
