Explore the Complexities of Social (In)Justice at the U.S.-Mexico Border
Experience a month-long series of captivating events that delve into the intricate issues surrounding social justice and injustice at the U.S.-Mexico border. Join us as we offer diverse perspectives and potential solutions to these pressing matters.
The series will run from September 18 to October 16 and will feature enlightening lectures by specialists, engaging conversations with activists, and stimulating workshops with artists, among other thought-provoking events. Through dialogue, exhibitions, and performances, you will be challenged to recognize the wide-reaching impact of “border issues” on both those navigating the borderlands and our society as a whole. Topics will include border-crossing, farmworkers, and the environmental consequences of the wall.
“Maki Maki Theater” by Gabriela Galup, a Peruvian-born Tucson artist who uses textiles and puppetry to create commentary on this era of mass displacement.
According to Diana Barnes, Senior Teaching Professor of Spanish and co-organizer of the series, borders are constructed by those who seek to keep others away, resulting in a social hierarchy that asserts power over people’s movements, interactions, and even their survival.
“This project aims to amplify the voices that are often silenced, reaching out from the border and shedding light on the experiences of those who live with the consequences of the border wall at the southern edge of the U.S.”
Highlights of the series include:
- David Romo, a historian and musician, and his band Los Liminals will perform at Caffe Lena on Thursday, September 21.
- On October 13 and 14, the Tang Teaching Museum will host “The Art of Resistance,” featuring talks, performances, and workshops by three talented artists. Gabriela Galup, a textile artist and puppeteer born in Peru; Jesus “CIMI” Alvarado, a muralist from El Paso, Texas; and Álvaro Enciso, a metalsmith and woodworker born in Colombia.
- Zachery McMillan, a documentarian, will present his film “Invisible Valley,” a documentary about California’s Coachella Valley and the impending environmental and social crisis, on October 16.
- Virtual speakers include Ruben Zecena, an interdisciplinary scholar who explores queer migration experiences; Enrique Valenzuela, a demographer from Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, who provides care for the city’s migrant population; and Mary Mendoza, a historian specializing in the U.S./Mexico borderlands and the connections between natural and built environments.
- In-person speakers include Jean Eddy Saint Paul, a scholar from Brooklyn College who discusses Haitian migrant border-crossing experiences, and Gina Pérez, an author and professor who presents on sanctuary movements and faith-based organizing in Latino communities in Ohio.
The series is proudly supported by Skidmore College’s Office of the President, Racial Justice Initiative, and various departments, programs, and offices across campus. It is organized and coordinated by Senior Teaching Professor Diana Barnes and Associate Professor Oscar Pérez Hernández, director of Latin American, Caribbean, and Latinx studies.
