Introducing the OnePlus Open: A Foldable Smartphone by Chinese Manufacturer
This week, Chinese smartphone company OnePlus entered the foldable smartphone market with the launch of its first foldable device, the OnePlus Open. OnePlus joins the ranks of other manufacturers, such as Samsung, Google, and Xiaomi, who have already ventured into the foldable smartphone arena. In this article, we take a closer look at the OnePlus Open and compare it to Apple’s latest flagship model, the iPhone 15 Pro Max.
Foldable Design and Display
The OnePlus Open features a book-like folding mechanism, similar to the Galaxy Fold. When folded, it boasts a 6.31-inch display – slightly smaller than the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max. However, when unfolded, it offers a 7.82-inch OLED display, which is comparable to the size of an iPad Mini. The displays support a 120Hz refresh rate, and OnePlus promotes the use of a “Ceramic Guard” cover glass, which is reminiscent of Apple’s Ceramic Shield.
Form Factor and Size
The OnePlus Open differentiates itself from Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro Max by its distinctive form factor. Although Apple has yet to explore foldable smartphones, the OnePlus Open incorporates similar internal components. With its sleek and lightweight design, the OnePlus Open ranks between the Z Fold5 and the Pixel Fold. It can be folded completely flat, and the resulting crease is nearly imperceptible. When folded, it measures 11.7mm in thickness, which reduces to a mere 5.8mm when unfolded. This makes it thinner than the iPhone 15 Pro Max, which has a thickness of 8.25mm. Additionally, the OnePlus Open weighs 239 grams, 18 grams heavier than the 15 Pro Max.
Camera Capabilities
OnePlus has partnered with renowned camera company Hasselblad to equip the OnePlus Open with impressive camera features. It boasts a 48-megapixel wide-angle camera, a 64-megapixel telephoto camera with 6x in-sensor lossless zoom, and a 48-megapixel ultra wide-angle camera. Additionally, it offers a 20-megapixel front-facing selfie camera when unfolded and a 32-megapixel selfie camera when closed.
Design and Additional Features
The OnePlus Open possesses a distinctive circular housing on the rear, resembling the face of a luxury watch. This housing accommodates the lenses, although its considerable size can sometimes obstruct photographs. The device is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 mobile platform, offers 16GB RAM, incorporates a fingerprint sensor power button, houses a 4,805mAh battery, and supports Wi-Fi 7.
Pricing and Availability
The OnePlus Open is currently available for pre-order and is expected to launch on October 26. Its starting price is $1,700.
