Our guide to Vancouver from FT Globetrotter introduces you to Wedgewood, a rare and unique luxury hotel in the city. As Vancouver’s only Relais & Châteaux member, this independent hotel stands out from the crowd. Founded in 1984 by Eleni Skalbania, a Greece-born businesswoman and previous owner of the Hotel Georgia, Wedgewood remains family-owned and women-run today. Skalbania wanted to create a country-house atmosphere at Wedgewood, which is evident in the elegant arched awnings, personal art and antique collection, custom-designed furniture, and top hat-wearing doormen. The lobby and lounge exude old world charm with its moody, wood-paneled walls, patterned carpets, fireplace, and large chandelier. Surrounded by glass skyscrapers, Wedgewood stands out with its resemblance to London’s The Stafford rather than its local counterparts.
The guest rooms and suites at Wedgewood offer classic luxury with smart furnishings and exceptional comfort. Although some rooms could benefit from updates, the overall experience is still delightful. After a long-haul flight from London, I was grateful for the spacious bed with a thick, heavy duvet and numerous pillows. The toiletries provided by L’Occitane add a classic touch. For those in need of rejuvenation, Wedgewood’s spa offers various facials, body treatments, and aesthetic services. The modern and well-equipped gym provides ample cardio and strength-training equipment, including a Peloton spin bike.
Not only does Wedgewood offer a comfortable stay, but it also boasts a great location. Situated next to the Vancouver Art Gallery in the downtown peninsula, guests can easily explore the area on foot or by bicycle. Additionally, the hotel is conveniently located for airport travel, with a 25-minute journey from YVR on the SkyTrain to Vancouver City Centre station and a short five-minute walk from there.
While staying at Wedgewood, be sure to visit the fantastic cocktail bar, a popular spot for both locals and tourists alike. With its gentlemen’s club decor, the Bacchus Lounge creates a cozy ambiance during the winter months and a relaxed alfresco feel when the floor-to-ceiling windows open in warmer weather. The attached Bacchus restaurant, under the leadership of executive chef Stefan Hartmann, offers some of the city’s best cuisine. Hartmann, previously known for his Michelin-starred restaurant Hartmanns in Berlin, applies classic techniques to British Columbia’s abundant produce, with a focus on Pacific coast fish and seafood.
In summary, Wedgewood is an ideal choice for traditionalists seeking old-school luxury. However, those looking for modern design may not find it here. Make sure to check out Bacchus, the hotel’s restaurant, which showcases Chef Stefan Hartmann’s culinary expertise. With 83 rooms and suites, a spa, and a gym, Wedgewood offers a complete luxury experience.
