Main Rivals for Tata Punch.ev: Upcoming Exter EV, Citroen eC3, and Renault Kiger EV

With the ICE and CNG segments already accounted for, the battle between the Punch and Exter will now be fought in the electric realm. Both carmakers are actively testing their respective electric versions. The Punch.ev has been seen multiple times before, and recent spy shots reveal new details about the interiors.

What to Expect with Tata Punch.ev

The Punch.ev is set to launch before the Exter EV, given the number of test mules spotted for the former. While the Tata Punch has enjoyed great success, it now faces a potent rival in the form of the Hyundai Exter. In July, the Exter was the third best-selling Hyundai car with 7,000 units in sales. Meanwhile, the Punch recorded sales of 12,019 units in July.

As Tata has already implemented electrification strategies with the Nexon, Tiago, and Tigor, major changes to the exteriors of the Punch.ev are unlikely. However, minor elements like a full-width LED DRL and EV-specific badging are expected. Recent spy shots offer glimpses of the interior, which were previously concealed on test mules.

For the first time, a large infotainment screen and an auto-dimming IRVM can be spotted. These features are not available on the ICE Punch. The screen is likely to be 10.2 inches in size, similar to the ICE Nexon, and not the 12.3-inch unit seen on the Nexon.ev. The instrument cluster may also be shared with the new Nexon facelift, featuring a fully configurable digital display.

The Punch.ev boasts projector headlamps, top-mounted LED DRLs, squarish wheel arches, 90° opening doors, thick body cladding, roof rails, rear disc brakes, and sporty tail lamps. It is expected that the Punch EV will come with a new set of wheels designed for improved aerodynamics.

Different Interiors for Different Trim Levels

The features inside will vary based on the trim. This has been observed in test mules which have been spotted with varying equipment. The top-spec variants of the Punch EV are expected to come equipped with premium elements such as a new two-spoke steering wheel from the Nexon facelift, featuring a backlit Tata logo, along with touch and toggle steering controls.

The lower trims of the Punch EV could continue using the steering wheel from the ICE Punch. These lower trims might borrow a lot of equipment from the Tiago EV. On the other hand, higher trims could feature elements from the Nexon.ev variants, including 360-degree cameras and electronic parking brakes.

Notable features of the Punch EV include automatic climate control, push-button start/stop, auto fold ORVMs, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and gear knob, and a cooled glove box.

Punch EV Performance and Range

Just like the ICE version, the Tata Punch.ev will deliver an exhilarating drive experience. With the electric setup, an improvement can be expected in areas such as acceleration, noise, and vibrations. Although specifications have not been revealed, the powertrain could be a tweaked version of the one used in the Tiago EV.

The expected range of the Punch EV is around 300 to 350 km. For reference, the Tiago EV has variants with ranges of 250 km and 315 km, powered by a 19.2 kWh and 24 kWh battery, respectively. A range of approximately 350 km is deemed sufficient for daily commutes and short inter-city or weekend trips.
