GMB host Kate Garraway has shared that her husband, Derek Draper, recently experienced a ‘nasty infection.’ This comes after he battled Covid-19 and sepsis, leaving him fighting for his life. Kate’s book, “The Strength Of Love,” was released today and delves into her family’s struggles with the healthcare system.
During an episode of Good Morning Britain, Kate mentioned that Derek’s infection set him back, but they are thankfully making progress. Kate emphasized that many people within the healthcare system feel trapped and unsupported, especially during times of crisis.
Kate also spoke about her role as Derek’s caregiver, describing it as a privilege. She revealed that she only sleeps for about four hours each night and has not taken a single day off from caring for Derek since he fell ill. She is determined to shed light on the challenges faced by people in similar situations, as they try to navigate through the complex care system.
In addition to sharing her experiences on Good Morning Britain, Kate has also made two documentaries exploring Derek’s ongoing battle with the long-term effects of Covid-19. Both documentaries won National Television Awards in the authored documentary category. Her dedication to broadcasting, journalism, and charity earned her an MBE in the 2022 New Year Honours.
Kate also opened up about her own health scare, revealing that she was hospitalized due to severe chest pains. The stress of caring for Derek led to this alarming incident. She experienced excruciating pain and was rushed to the nearest A&E for tests. While it wasn’t a heart attack, doctors are monitoring her condition as it may be stress-related angina.
As Kate continues to care for Derek and advocate for others in similar situations, she acknowledges the emotional strain it puts on her. Despite the challenges, she remains determined to fight on and support her husband in his recovery.
