ALBANY – Adam Nimoy, son of the late Leonard Nimoy and best known for his father’s portrayal of Mr. Spock in the Star Trek series, will be presenting a fascinating talk titled “Jewish Connections to Star Trek” at Congregation Ohav Shalom on Sunday, October 29th at 10 a.m. The event will take place at 113 New Krumkill Road.
Adam Nimoy, a noted writer and director, reveals that the iconic ‘Live Long and Prosper’ hand gesture actually originates from an ancient Jewish blessing. However, the connections between Star Trek and Jewish wisdom extend far beyond this gesture, encompassing elements found in the Old Testament and the Talmud.
“This topic is not only intriguing for Trekkies, but also for those interested in history and Jewish culture,” said Adam Nimoy in a news release from Ohav Shalom.
Leonard Nimoy, who played Spock for nearly 50 years, incorporated aspects of Judaism into his role. Adam Nimoy has continued his father’s legacy by writing, speaking, and presenting about this fascinating phenomenon. Both Nimoys have a deep connection to the traditions and practices of Judaism.
“Since the beginning of COVID, I’ve been avidly watching Star Trek, particularly Deep Space Nine, Next Generation, and Voyager (thanks to my wife’s sage advice),” said Rabbi Dan Ornstein of Congregation Ohav Shalom. “I’ve noticed the Jewish echoes in these series, including the original series where Adam’s father, Leonard Nimoy, had such a significant role. Having the opportunity to hear about these connections directly from Adam is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for all of us!”
Adam Nimoy also made a guest appearance on the Big Bang Theory in November 2015 in an episode called “The Spock Resonance,” as a tribute to his father who passed away in February of that year. He directed the award-winning documentary feature film, For the Love of Spock, in 2016, dedicated to his father’s memory.
According to Congregation Ohav Shalom, Adam Nimoy graduated from UC Berkeley with a bachelor’s degree in political science. He later obtained a Juris Doctorate from Loyola Law School and practiced entertainment law, specializing in music and music publishing, for seven years. He studied filmmaking at UCLA Extension and directed his father in the 1995 remake of episode I of the Outer Limits called I, Robot. Additionally, he has directed more than 45 hours of television, including episodes of NYPD Blue, The Practice, Ally McBeal, and The Gilmore Girls. He taught filmmaking at the New York Film Academy in Los Angeles for eight years and is a member of the Board of Beit T’Shuvah, a residential addiction treatment center in Los Angeles.
