Exclusive: EU Urges Elon Musk to Combat Hamas Misinformation on Platform X

Musk Urged by EU to Address Illegal Content on X

Following a recent attack by terrorist group Hamas on Israel, Elon Musk received a letter from Thierry Breton, a member of the European Commission committee, regarding the dissemination of illegal content and disinformation on Musk’s microblogging platform, X. The EU is demanding that X implement clear policies, review and remove questionable content in a timely manner, and take down old images or video game footage misused to depict armed conflicts. Musk has been given 24 hours to respond and ensure compliance with the EU’s Digital Services Act.

Musk’s Response and EU’s Counter

In response to the EU’s letter, Musk highlighted X’s policy of transparency and openness, requesting a list of the alleged violations so that the public can evaluate them. Breton, on the other hand, reminded Musk of reports of fake content and the promotion of violence present on X, emphasizing the need for Musk to demonstrate compliance with the DSA. He assured Musk that his team is available to ensure compliance and warned of potential penalties for non-compliance.

Efforts to Combat Hamas-related Misinformation on X

X has initiated several measures to combat Hamas-related misinformation, including allowing users to control their exposure to sensitive media. The platform is also removing newly created Hamas-affiliated accounts, collaborating with the Global Internet Forum to Counter Terrorism, and proactively monitoring for antisemitic speech. However, experts question the effectiveness of X’s controversial anti-fake news tool, Community Notes, as it relies on crowdsourcing and ideological consensus.

X’s Handling of Israel-Hamas Posts

According to X’s recent post, there have been over 50 million global posts on the platform focusing on the Hamas attack on Israel. X’s escalation teams have taken action on tens of thousands of posts containing graphic media, violent speech, and hateful conduct. Additionally, several hundred accounts attempting to manipulate trending topics have been removed. A member’s account revealed that 8% of 120 posts related to fake news stories received community notes. However, 26% of notes on these posts are yet to be approved. Furthermore, Alethea, a social media analysis company, identified 67 accounts coordinating a false news campaign related to the Israel-Hamas war.
