Universal is developing a new take on the action franchise, with All Quiet on the Western Front director Edward Berger leading the charge, as confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter.
The new Bourne project is in the early stages of development. Matt Damon, who became an action star with the role in the early 2000s, could potentially become involved at this stage where there is no script and thus no star commitments. The news was initially reported by Deadline.
Damon played Bourne in a trilogy of films from 2002-07 and then reprised the role in 2016’s Jason Bourne. The features, based on the novels of late author Robert Ludlum, centered on a government operative who loses his memory and is hunted by his own country. Jeremy Renner also starred in a spinoff, 2012’s The Bourne Legacy.
Edward Berger, who was Oscar-nominated for the screenplay for All Quiet on the Western Front, has recently gained recognition for his work. Berger’s upcoming project Conclave, starring Ralph Fiennes and John Lithgow, was recently acquired by Focus.
