Bernie Taupin, the prolific lyricist behind many of Elton John’s biggest hits, has been a constant presence by the music icon’s side for over five decades. And according to Taupin, the two have plans to create more music in the near future.
In an interview on “CBS Mornings,” Taupin clarified that John’s retirement is limited to touring and not their musical partnership. He stated, “People mistakenly believe that because [John is] retired from the road, he is retired from music altogether. But that’s not the case. We are still active as a musical entity, and we have plans to hit the studio very soon.”
In addition to their upcoming musical endeavors, Taupin has released his memoir titled “Scattershot: Life, Music, Elton, and Me.” The book provides an intimate look into Taupin’s life, including his encounters with influential figures like Andy Warhol and John Belushi. Readers gain insight into the enduring nature of Taupin and John’s partnership, with numerous anecdotes from their extensive careers.
Taupin attributes their success to their contrasting personalities, stating, “There is no one more opposite to each other than we are.” He adds, “If we were like-minded in every way, our partnership probably wouldn’t have flourished.”
Initially, the two artists began as an “army of two.” However, over the years, they have developed their own lives while maintaining a strong connection. Taupin reveals that they continue to communicate frequently through Zoom.
John recently concluded his “Farewell Yellow Brick Road” tour, which consisted of 330 shows over 663 days. Despite concerns about John’s health following a fall, Taupin reassures fans that John is “fine” and “as tough as old boots.”
When asked about his proudest song in his collaboration with John, Taupin points to “Sacrifice.” However, he jokingly suggests that his proudest song may still be unwritten by saying, “In the words of Duke Ellington, ‘The one I’m gonna write tomorrow, the next one.'”
