Jeff Bezos, the visionary who established Amazon from his humble Seattle garage in 1994, has made the decision to relocate to Miami in order to be closer to his parents and his space exploration company, Blue Origin.
In a video posted on Instagram late Thursday, Bezos shared his journey back to Amazon’s earliest office, which happened to be the garage of his rented home in the Seattle suburb of Bellevue, Washington. It was in this garage that Bezos launched Amazon as an online bookstore in 1995, eventually transforming it into the e-commerce and cloud computing behemoth it is today.
Reflecting on his time in Seattle, Bezos wrote, “I’ve resided in Seattle longer than any other place and have countless fond memories here. While this move is filled with excitement, it also carries an emotional weight for me. Seattle, you will always hold a special place in my heart.”
The rapid growth of Amazon has had a profound impact on Seattle, particularly in the South Lake Union area where the company’s headquarters is located. While it brought in a wave of highly paid tech workers, it also led to rising rents and a surge in homelessness.
Having stepped down as Amazon’s CEO in 2021 and passing on the torch to former cloud boss Andy Jassy, Bezos has focused more on personal ventures such as the Earth Fund, Blue Origin, and the Washington Post, which he acquired in 2013.
Bezos has already expanded his presence beyond Seattle, recently acquiring two adjacent properties in Miami’s Indian Creek Village, also known as the “billionaire bunker.” He also owns various properties around the world.
