Exciting Discovery: New York Library Finds Book Returned After Almost a Century

A library in New York received a remarkable surprise when a book was returned nearly nine decades overdue. The Larchmont Public Library in Larchmont, New York, shared on Facebook that they received a package from Virginia containing a library book that was due on October 11th, 1933, effectively 90 years ago. Joanie Morgan from Virginia discovered the book, “Youth and Two Other Stories” by Joseph Conrad, in her stepfather’s belongings and reached out to the library in July for guidance on what to do with it. In late September, Morgan mailed the book back to the library, exactly 90 years after its original due date. The library hopes that this incident will serve as a reminder to patrons who may have extremely overdue library items in their possession. Liam Hegarty, head of reference at the Larchmont Public Library, expressed that they view the return of such overdue books as an opportunity to educate their patrons on the consequences of keeping library items for extended periods. The library authorities also revealed that this book was the most overdue in the history of the institution since its establishment in 1926. Initially, there was some confusion as there is also a library called Larchmont in Norfolk, Virginia, but according to Morgan’s letter, her stepfather and his family used to reside close to the New York Larchmont library. The library charged the maximum late fee of $5 upon the book’s return and has taken it out of circulation. The library considers any overdue book, no matter the duration, to carry a maximum fine of $5. However, they have decided not to collect the fine for this particular case. The library plans to keep this extraordinary book as a memento due to its amusing story and will not lend it out again.
