Ex-MLB Ballplayer Charges Towards Stands at Independent League Match to Confront Disruptive Spectator

Raudy Read, the former Washington Nationals catcher who now plays for the independent Atlantic League’s Spire City Ghost Hounds, found himself in a confrontation with a heckling fan during a game. The incident was captured on the Ghost Hounds’ broadcast while they were playing against the Long Island Ducks.

The altercation occurred during extra innings when Read was at first base and caught a double play to end the top of the 10th inning. As his team headed back to the dugout, attempting to overcome an 11-8 deficit in the bottom of the inning, Read threw his glove towards his teammates and made his way towards the stands.

During the broadcast, the play-by-play announcer exclaimed, “Something is happening up on the concourse!” The audio of an advertisement played while images of the game were still being shown, revealing Read being calmed down by security guards and others. Eventually, his teammates managed to get him back onto the field from the concourse.

According to a user on Twitter, the heckling fan and his daughter were hurling derogatory names at Read throughout the inning. The user stated, “Can I just say I was at this game and the names this dude and daughter were calling Raudy that whole inning were [asinine] and barbaric.”

Despite hitting a home run earlier in the sixth inning, Read became the final out of the game when he returned to the field and struck out.

Read had previously played in 14 Major League Baseball games in 2017 and 2019 with the Washington Nationals, where he had a batting average of .182 (4-for-22) in his plate appearances.
