An ex-Cal State Fullerton basketball player, who was serving time for the murder of his former girlfriend, has committed suicide according to authorities.

The Clark County Office of the Coroner/Medical Examiner has determined that Justin Burns, a 39-year-old former basketball player, died from asphyxia due to strangulation. Burns passed away on June 8 at High Desert State Prison where he was serving time for the second-degree murder of Michele Carson, a 25-year-old woman from West Covina.

Upon receiving the news of Burn’s suicide, Michele Carson’s father, John Carson, expressed a sense of relief knowing that Burns will not be eligible for parole and pose a threat to anyone else. John Carson also mentioned that he could not speculate on the reasons behind Burns’ decision to take his own life. He extended his gratitude to the Victim Services Unit at the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, the prosecutor Robert Daskas, and victim services officer Jennifer Rey from the Nevada Department of Corrections for their exceptional support during the whole process.

Elynne Greene, the manager of the Victim Services Unit, informed John Carson about Burns’ death in his prison cell. Burns and Michele Carson had initially met at Cal State Fullerton, where Burns was a center for the basketball team from 2004 to 2007. Their relationship lasted for approximately five years before ending in tragedy with Burns strangling, burning, and burying Michele Carson’s body in the desert. Her remains were discovered in 2010 by individuals engaged in target shooting.

Burns was arrested in Mississippi in 2011 and eventually pleaded guilty to second-degree murder with the use of a deadly weapon on July 31, 2017. He was serving a sentence of 10 to 25 years.
