Two wildfires erupted on the southern outskirts of Cabazon yesterday, scorching nearly 100 acres of land. Thankfully, firefighters were able to partially contain the fires and no injuries were reported.
The fires were first reported around 11:45 a.m. in the Almond Street and Esperanza Avenue area, located about a mile south of Interstate 10. The Riverside County Fire Department immediately dispatched multiple engine and hand crews from both the county and U.S. Forest Service to tackle the flames.
These brush fires were spreading through medium brush at a moderate rate. The larger fire was estimated to be around 80 acres, while the smaller one was about 15 acres. As of 4:30 p.m., the larger fire was 75% contained, while the smaller fire was only 10% contained.
An evacuation order was in effect for the area south of Esther Avenue, north of Hattie Avenue, west of Lime Street, and east of Peach Street. Additionally, an evacuation warning was issued for the area south of Bonita, north of Esther, west of Peach, and east of Broadway Street. A care and reception center was set up at Nicolet Middle School in Banning, providing assistance to those affected.
Throughout the afternoon, four Cal Fire air tankers and two water-dropping helicopters worked tirelessly to combat the fires as they moved east through the San Gorgonio Pass. Fortunately, there have been no reports of any damage caused by the fires.
Authorities are still trying to determine the cause of the fires. Investigation is ongoing.
