Bronze medalist Eumir Marcial of the Philippines proudly stood on the podium during the medal ceremony for the men’s middleweight boxing final bout at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games in August 2021. In an interview, Marcial discussed his future plans and his determination to achieve his golden Olympic dream.
Marcial expressed that if he fails to qualify for the Paris Olympics through the Asian Games, he will shift his focus entirely to his professional career. He believes that if he can’t make it, it’s a sign that the Olympic journey wasn’t meant for him. The 27-year-old boxer from Zamboanga City stated that he will no longer explore other qualifying avenues after the Asian Games.
However, if he does make it to the Paris Olympics, Marcial vowed to give his best efforts to surpass the bronze medal he earned in the Tokyo Olympics. Known for his power-punching skills, Marcial, the pride of the Philippines, aims to make his mark in the middleweight division.
The Asian Games, scheduled in Hangzhou, China from September 23 to October 8, also serve as an Olympic qualifier for boxing. Since Marcial’s weight class (75kg) has been removed from the Olympic program, he plans to compete in a heavier division at 81kg. He acknowledges that the competition will be tougher in the higher weight class, but he feels more comfortable at 81kg as it aligns with his walking weight.
Having transitioned to professional prizefighting after a successful amateur career, Marcial remains undefeated in four professional fights, including two knockouts. He has informed the Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines and top amateur boxing officials that he will primarily train in the United States before the Asian Games.
Although he intends to join the national team a few weeks before the continental meet, Marcial declined to participate in the team’s camp in India from July 28 to August 20. He is unsure if he will be able to travel with them to another camp in Canberra, Australia, for the final stage of preparations before the Hangzhou meet.
According to Marcial, what matters most is having several sparring partners to enhance his skills, along with focusing on mental toughness and physical strength. He believes that training in the US will provide him with the opportunity to spar against bigger opponents, which will benefit his development as a boxer.
As part of his professional career, Marcial is scheduled to fight in late August or early September in the United States. International matchmaker Sean Gibbons will assist him in finding suitable opponents for his upcoming fights. Marcial emphasizes the importance of training with bigger guys, an opportunity he believes he can only find in the US.
