Huawei, the Chinese telecommunications giant, is once again in the spotlight in Europe. A report suggests that Germany may ban certain equipment from Huawei in its 5G network. Thierry Breton, the EU commissioner for the internal market, has called on more EU countries to follow suit and ban Chinese telecommunications firms Huawei and ZTE from their 5G networks, citing national security risks. In January 2020, the EU adopted a “5G cybersecurity toolbox” to assess the risks associated with specific providers of 5G infrastructure. Only 10 EU countries have restricted or banned Huawei so far. Breton emphasized the need for swift decisions to replace high-risk suppliers and urged telecom operators to address the issue. The EU commissioner also stated that the EU will implement the principles of the 5G toolbox in its own procurement of telecom services. China has expressed firm opposition to the EU countries’ bans on Huawei. Germany is now considering a ban on Huawei and ZTE in its 5G network, resulting in dissatisfaction from China’s embassy in Germany. The U.S. and its allies, including the U.K. and Australia, have already banned Huawei from their 5G networks. The EU has described China as both a “partner” and a “systemic rival,” and it seeks to maintain a cautious relationship with China while evaluating its influence. Despite the security concerns, telecom operators have faced challenges in finding alternative providers to replace Huawei due to its advanced technology and competitive pricing.
