A convicted rapist who authorities say used a jet ski during his escape from an Arkansas prison last year was apprehended on Tuesday in West Virginia. The US Marshals Service announced that Samuel Paul Hartman, 39, was arrested at a hotel in Lewisburg, along with his wife, mother, and his mother’s boyfriend. According to the AP, the women are accused of aiding Hartman’s escape from the East Arkansas Regional Unit in Brickeys, a location 96 miles east of Little Rock, in August 2022.
Hartman was participating in a work detail near the detention facility when a pickup truck carrying the women approached. As Hartman ran towards the vehicle, several shots were fired at a corrections officer. The fleeing vehicle then reached two jet skis that were positioned near the Mississippi River, not far from the prison. The statement indicates that the jet skis were later found abandoned on the Mississippi side of the river, with a witness reporting that one man and two women were seen riding them.
In addition to Hartman, the authorities arrested his wife, 39-year-old Misty Hartman, his mother, 61-year-old Linda Annette White, and Rodney Trent, 52, identified as White’s boyfriend. The Marshals Service has charged Trent with harboring a sex offender and aiding Hartman and the two women. The service did not disclose the specific charges against Misty Hartman and White. Hartman, who is now 39, received a life sentence in 2013 for a rape conviction in Franklin County, Arkansas.
