Palestinian Rights Demonstration in West Los Angeles Draws Thousands
A massive demonstration advocating for Palestinian rights took place on Saturday afternoon near the Federal Building in West Los Angeles. With the aim of promoting peace, the police closely monitored the event.
The rally, called “Rally for Return: ALL OUT FOR GAZA,” commenced at 12:30 p.m. in front of the Consulate General of Israel on Wilshire Blvd. Organized by the Palestinian Youth Movement, similar demonstrations occurred in various cities across North America during Israel’s ongoing conflict with Hamas.
According to reporters present at the scene, the crowd size exceeded 1,000 participants, with many marching along Wilshire Boulevard.
The LAPD PIO shared, “West LA Div is monitoring a demonstration near the Federal Building, working with the group organizers to facilitate First Amendment Rights. Traffic will be impacted on Wilshire Blvd. from Federal to Veteran (avenues).”
LAPD Officer Drake Madison confirmed that as of 4:20 p.m., the event remained peaceful, according to City News Service. However, Emily Holshouser from the Southern California News Group reported a tense situation arising when a man, donning an Israeli flag and a kippah, approached some individuals. The police intervened and separated the parties involved after a few minutes.
At one point during the demonstration, tear gas or a similar agent was released.
Several demonstrators showed their support by carrying or wearing Palestinian flags. Signs with messages like “Resistance is Not Terrorism,” “Long Live Palestine,” and “Free All Palestinian Political Prisoners. End the Occupation” were also observed.
Due to the protest, the California Highway Patrol issued a SigAlert at 2:42 p.m., temporarily closing the northbound and southbound Wilshire Boulevard on- and off-ramps from the San Diego (405) Freeway. The ramps reopened at 4:38 p.m.
Providing an update at 3:45 p.m., the LAPD announced, “Wilshire Blvd is open to traffic. Intermittent closures on side streets will be implemented to allow pedestrians to cross at the intersections.”
