Rishi Sunak emphasizes that quality will not be compromised for speed in the UK-India trade deal, while James Cleverly remains noncommittal on whether the pact will be finalized before the next general election.
Arriving in Delhi for a G20 summit, the Prime Minister highlighted that trade deals require substantial effort and time, and reaching an agreement with India is not guaranteed.
During the plane journey to Delhi, Johnson stated, “That’s why I’ve never set artificial deadlines for these trade deals. I’ve always emphasized that we should not prioritize speed over quality.
“We must ensure that the final outcome benefits both parties. While discussing this with Prime Minister [Narendra] Modi is important, it is not the primary purpose of this visit and trip.”
Discussions for the trade deal are ongoing. When asked whether the agreement would be completed before the expected general election next year, Foreign Secretary Cleverly declined to provide a specific timeline, emphasizing that the UK will not rush through to meet an arbitrary target.
He stated, “We do want a trade deal, and we aim to resolve it as quickly as possible, as long as it is mutually beneficial.”
