Police increase security and patrols around Jewish institutions in Los Angeles, Beverly Hills, and Santa Monica following the Hamas attack on Israel.
“The Los Angeles Police Department is aware of the turmoil in the Middle East and the lives lost. In the areas where we serve both our Jewish and Muslim communities, we will conduct extra patrols to ensure the safety of all,” said LAPD Chief Michel Moore.
Beverly Hills Mayor Julian Gold condemned the act of terrorism by Hamas and called on President Biden and Congress to swiftly support Israel. Gold also urged peace-loving nations and the United Nations to condemn the violence.
The Santa Monica Police Department’s watch commander stated that they have been conducting checks in response to the news.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is also increasing its activity and conducting extra patrols to monitor the situation.
Hamas, a Palestinian Sunni-Islamic fundamentalist group founded in 1987, launched an attack on Israel by firing thousands of rockets from the Gaza Strip and sending in ground forces.
Israel reported casualties and captured individuals as a result of the attack, while retaliatory fighting in Gaza reportedly caused Palestinian deaths.
A second round of rockets hit multiple locations in Israel, including Tel Aviv, on the 50th anniversary of the “Yom Kippur War”. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared that Israel is at war and vowed vengeance for the attack.
President Joe Biden expressed support for Israel, and Southland elected leaders condemned the attack. Mayor Karen Bass stood with Israel and expressed condolences for the families affected.
Rabbi Noah Farkas, president and CEO of The Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles, mourned the loss of innocent Israeli lives and prayed for the health and safe return of those affected. The federation is working to provide resources and support to Israel.
“Israel will prevail, and the Jewish people will stand together,” Rabbi Farkas said. The federation has set up an emergency fund to support the victims.
