Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders is not holding back in his response to Colorado State head coach Jay Norvell’s criticism of his fashion choices. Ahead of their upcoming matchup, Norvell made comments during a media session, suggesting that he disapproves of Sanders wearing sunglasses and a hat during interviews. Sanders fired back, stating, “When I talk to grown-ups, I take my hat and my glasses off. That’s what my mother taught me.” Sanders is determined to let his team’s performance do the talking, regardless of what is said about them.
In a recent Instagram post, Sanders shared a video where he gifted his entire team sunglasses. The video shows Sanders saying, “Imma give you these. These are the shades.” Colorado’s equipment staff then distributed sunglasses to each player during a meeting. Sanders expressed his excitement, commenting, “I just want to see how y’all look in them. You look good. You look fly.”
Norvell’s comment about Sanders has only added fuel to the already intense rivalry between the two teams. In Sanders’ first year as head coach, the Buffaloes have had a strong start, defeating TCU on the road and Nebraska in their first home game. Currently ranked No. 18 in the nation, Sanders’ team is expected to dominate their matchup against Colorado State this Saturday. Sanders acknowledged that Norvell’s comment has made the game “personal” for him and his players.
Last week, Sanders used a similar motivation strategy when their opponent’s head coach seemingly took a shot at his program. Sanders highlighted the personal nature of the game, as it was perceived as an attack on his players. While Norvell did show praise for Sanders earlier in the week, acknowledging the struggles African American coaches face, his recent comments have created tension between the two coaches.
The Colorado Buffaloes have had the upper hand in the “Rocky Mountain Showdown” against Colorado State, winning the matchup five times in a row.
