Engaging Recap: Republican Debate Takes Prime-Time Spotlight, Outshining Non-Sports Content of the Week

The second Republican presidential debate of the 2024 campaign was the most-watched non-sports program in the first week of the 2023-24 prime-time television season, while the Tuesday edition of the NBC singing contest, “The Voice” was the most-watched entertainment program.

According to live-plus-same-day figures released by Nielsen, the two-hour debate last Wednesday from the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley averaged a combined 9.323 million viewers on Fox News Channel, Fox Business Network, and Univision. It ranked seventh among prime-time programs airing between Sept. 25 and Sunday.

The most-watched program of the week was NBC’s “Sunday Night Football” game between the Kansas City Chiefs and New York Jets. It averaged 24.832 million viewers. Other NFL games and related programs also outperformed the debate in terms of viewership.

The Tuesday edition of “The Voice” averaged 6.539 million viewers, ranking twelfth for the week. It experienced a slight increase in viewership compared to its season premiere.

In a week with limited first-run scripted programming due to the Writers Guild of America strike, the most-watched scripted program was an episode of the neo-Western series “Yellowstone.” Originally aired on Paramount Network in 2018, it averaged 4.433 million viewers on CBS.

The ABC dating series “The Golden Bachelor” premiered with an average of 4.361 million viewers, making it the most-watched among the week’s new shows on major English-language broadcast networks.

Other notable programs included the NBC crime drama “The Irrational,” the Fox game show “Snake Oil,” and the reality singing competition “The Masked Singer.”

Viewership for NBC, fueled by “Sunday Night Football,” “The Voice,” and “America’s Got Talent,” helped it maintain its position as the most-watched network for the fourth consecutive week.

The game between the Kansas City Chiefs and New York Jets was the most-watched NFL game of the season so far.

Overall, NBC, ABC, and CBS were the top three networks in terms of viewership, with Fox following closely behind.

The Fox News Channel was the most-watched cable network, maintaining its dominance for the twelfth time in fourteen weeks.

These rankings are based on Nielsen’s fast national figures and do not include out-of-home viewing.

It’s worth noting the significant increase in female viewership for the game between the Kansas City Chiefs and New York Jets, particularly among teenage girls and women of various age groups, according to Nielsen.

Among the cable networks, ESPN and MSNBC also achieved strong viewership numbers for their prime-time programming.
