Emotional Tribute: Patrick Duffy Commemorates Suzanne Somers, Co-Star of ‘Step by Step’

Suzanne Somers and Patrick Duffy brought the quintessential blended American family to life as the stars of the popular ’90s TV sitcom “Step by Step.” Duffy and Somers portrayed the characters Frank Lambert and Carol Foster, who were single parents that fell in love, got married, and merged their families together. This unique concept of family resonated with viewers and showcased a new perspective on relationships.

Sadly, Somers passed away on October 15th after a long battle with aggressive breast cancer. Her representative confirmed this news and expressed that she had bravely fought the disease for over 23 years. Duffy, her co-star, expressed his shock and sadness on Instagram, sharing a portrait of Somers and describing her passing as unbelievable. He acknowledged that although she is no longer physically present, her memory and impact would continue to live on.

Duffy reminisced about the close bond he shared with Somers, mentioning the phone calls, emails, visits, and shared laughter that they had enjoyed together. He acknowledged that while he would miss these interactions, he would continue to have conversations with her in his daily Buddhist practice. Duffy also expressed that he, along with many others, would have cherished one more face-to-face meeting with her and Alan, Somers’ husband. He acknowledged the painful reality of human existence and praised Somers for the ripple effect she had created in the world.

“Step by Step” aired for six years on ABC before moving to CBS for one season and ultimately concluding in 1998. Somers had battled cancer twice before, facing both skin cancer in her 30s and breast cancer in her 50s. In July, she revealed that her breast cancer had returned. She had been living with cancer for several decades using a combination of alternative and conventional medicine. Despite the challenges, Somers remained resilient and continued to fight against her illness.

Somers, who was also known for her role as Chrissy Snow on “Three’s Company,” passed away surrounded by her loving husband Alan, her son Bruce, and her immediate family. Her family had planned on celebrating her 77th birthday on October 16th but will now focus on celebrating her extraordinary life. A private family burial will take place this week, followed by a memorial next month.

Throughout her life, Somers frequently spoke about her deep love and connection with her husband Alan. In addition to their son Bruce, they have three granddaughters named Camelia, Violet, and Daisy. Somers’ impact on the entertainment industry and the lives of millions of fans will always be remembered.
