Emmer Receives McCarthy’s Support with Open Door for Regaining the Gavel

Former House Speaker is throwing his support behind Majority Whip as the next potential speaker of the House. However, despite two failed attempts to find a candidate with enough support for the position, McCarthy is not ruling out the possibility of reclaiming his former role.

During an interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” McCarthy stated, “I don’t need the title. I’m willing to assist in any way possible.” When questioned further about the potential of him running for speaker again, the California Republican skillfully evaded the question.

“While I am endorsing Tom Emmer, I must emphasize that I am still a member of Congress and will continue to lead in any capacity to protect our country,” McCarthy asserted. He added, “I will work towards securing our borders, combating inflation, preventing potential conflicts in Israel, and ensuring that Israel has the necessary resources for self-defense. But above all, I will hold this administration accountable.”

Earlier this month, McCarthy was removed from his leadership position by eight conservative Republicans, led by Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.), after he presented a temporary spending bill that averted a government shutdown without implementing the spending cuts or border policies he had promised to pursue.

Since then, Republicans have been unable to reach a consensus on the new speaker, with both Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) and Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) falling short. Without a speaker, the House is unable to conduct legislative work.

“This situation is not just embarrassing for the Republican Party, but for the entire nation. We need to come together and find a solution,” McCarthy expressed on Sunday.
