Russia’s space agency is facing an “emergency” with its Luna-25 spacecraft, which was attempting to enter pre-landing orbit for a planned touchdown on Monday. The incident occurred when Roscosmos sent a command to prompt the lander to enter the orbit, but the space probe encountered a problem preventing it from performing the maneuver correctly, according to a statement on Telegram and confirmed by Tass.
Specialists are currently analyzing the situation, but no further details have been provided by Roscosmos.

Luna-25 is Russia’s first attempt to land on the moon since 1976. The unmanned spacecraft launched from the Vostochny cosmodrome in Russia’s eastern Amur region on August 11th. The spacecraft was scheduled to land two days ahead of an Indian mission, as countries around the world compete for a lunar presence.
The Russian lander features a 1.6-meter-long robotic arm designed to collect rocks, soil, and dust. Its mission is to study the composition of the moon’s south pole, where traces of frozen water have been detected by NASA and other agencies.
