Elon Musk’s Tesla Software Live Stream: A Close Call with Red Light Running

Tesla CEO Elon Musk experienced another glitch in the company’s autopilot feature while testing the new self-driving software in the Bay Area. Musk shared a livestream of the test drive on his social media platform, X (formerly known as Twitter). The 45-minute video, viewed over 11 million times, shows Musk leaving Tesla headquarters in Palo Alto. Using his finger, Musk plans a route with the Full Self-Driving (FSD) software, version 12, which he has described as “mind-blowing.”

During the drive, Musk proudly mentions not having to intervene, stating that “the drive has been butter smooth.” However, when stopped at an intersection, Musk realizes that the software lacks programmed information for traffic lights, speed bumps, stop signs, and roundabouts. After around 20 minutes, the software accelerates the car at a red light, prompting Musk to intervene and take control of the steering wheel. He acknowledges that this is why the software hasn’t been released to the public yet and expresses the need for additional development.

Despite this hiccup, the software operates smoothly for the remainder of the drive. In a light-hearted moment, Musk searches for the address of rival tech billionaire Mark Zuckerberg, jokingly suggesting a fight between the two. Musk and Zuckerberg have engaged in a playful rivalry lately, discussing a planned mixed martial arts cage match.

The latest test involved Tesla’s Full Self-Driving system, which has the potential to generate significant revenue for the company. The software, priced at $15,000, is not autonomous but offers advanced autonomous capabilities. Tesla owners, totaling around 400,000, have had access to the beta version since its 2020 release. While the software allows for autonomous driving in various settings, it still requires frequent intervention and supervision from drivers.

Musk aims to release the v12 update to take the Full Self-Driving system out of beta phase. However, he has faced delays in achieving full self-driving capability in the past. The technology has faced legal and regulatory scrutiny following accidents. Tesla emphasizes that the technology requires driver supervision and does not make the car fully autonomous. Despite challenges, Tesla sees the Full Self-Driving system as a potential revenue generator for the company.
