Elon Musk’s Perspective on Investing in India and His Friendship with Narendra Modi

Elon Musk, the CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, and owner of Twitter, expressed his immense excitement about the future of India. He believes that India holds more promise than any other large country in the world.

In a video interview published on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official YouTube page, Musk confessed his admiration for Modi and his commitment to India’s success. Musk stated, “He really wants to do the right thing for India. He wants to be open, he wants to be supportive of new companies, but at the same time make sure it accrues to India’s advantage.” The two influential figures last met in 2015 during Modi’s visit to Tesla’s Fremont Factory in California.

Modi is currently on his first state visit to the U.S., where he is expected to engage in high-level talks with leaders and business executives on defense, technology, and India’s role in the Indo-Pacific. President Joe Biden will also be hosting Modi at a White House dinner, where they will meet various business leaders, including Tim Cook of Apple, Sundar Pichai of Google, and Satya Nadella of Microsoft.

Musk shared his belief that India presents significant opportunities for Tesla. In agreement with Musk’s perspective, Nilesh Shah, the managing director at Kotak Mahindra Asset Management, emphasized that every U.S. company with a listed subsidiary in India has experienced higher growth and value creation in the country. Shah further stated, “U.S. investors will be reassured that building a U.S.-India partnership will be a true win-win situation for both countries.”

Tesla’s investments in India will focus on supporting sustainable energy generation, particularly through solar and wind power. Musk highlighted India’s potential for solar energy and explained that generating enough electricity to power the country would require only a small percentage of its land area. Additionally, Tesla aims to invest in stationary battery packs and electric vehicles in India. Shah also emphasized the importance of improving India’s internet connectivity, and Musk expressed his interest in bringing SpaceX’s Starlink satellite internet service to the country, particularly in remote or rural areas with limited internet access.

Modi extended an invitation for Musk to visit India, which Musk eagerly accepted, with the visit potentially occurring as early as next year. During his visit to New York, Modi had the opportunity to interact with renowned figures such as astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, investor Ray Dalio, and Grammy award winner Falguni Shah.
