Elon Musk’s Claim About Twitter’s ‘All-Time Record’ Goes Unproven

According to internet traffic experts, Elon Musk’s claim that Twitter could hit an “all-time record” this week doesn’t seem to be supported by the data. However, Mark Zuckerberg’s new platform, Threads, is gaining traction.

Musk made the claim in response to a post by Twitter CEO Linda Yaccarino, who said that the platform had its “largest usage day since February” last week. However, Matthew Prince, the CEO and co-founder of Cloudfare, shared a chart showing a downward trend in Twitter’s popularity, stating that “Twitter traffic is tanking.”

Further data from Similarweb, a digital data company, suggests that Twitter’s website traffic was down 5% compared to the previous week and 11% compared to the same days last year. This decline could be related to the rapid rise of Meta’s new platform, Threads.

Zuckerberg announced that Threads reached over 100 million sign-ups this past weekend, with most of the demand being organic. He also mentioned that sponsored content will soon be available on the app through Instagram’s branded content tools.

This impressive growth puts Threads on track to outpace ChatGPT, which became the fastest-growing consumer application ever in January, registering 100 million monthly active users two months after its launch.

Threads seems to be benefiting from the dissatisfaction of Twitter users with Musk’s policy changes and technical glitches on the platform. Additionally, the integration with Instagram’s user base has been advantageous.

Interestingly, X Corp., Twitter’s parent company, has threatened to sue Meta over Threads, alleging the misappropriation of Twitter’s trade secrets and intellectual property by poaching employees.
