Elon Musk Unveils ‘xAI’: A New Artificial Intelligence Company

Elon Musk has made a bold move by entering the AI race with the launch of his new company, xAI. Despite his previous claims about the dangers of AI, Musk aims to understand the true nature of the universe through this ambitious venture. The xAI team is comprised of talented individuals who have previously worked at renowned organizations such as DeepMind, OpenAI, Google Research, Microsoft Research, and Tesla. While the company’s website provides limited information, they have announced that more details will be shared during a live Twitter Space event on Friday.

In a tweet at 12:23pm ET, Musk announced the formation of @xAI, stating their mission to understand reality. He later revealed that the release date of xAI was chosen as a tribute to Douglas Adams’ “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.” The number 42, which is the result of adding up the month, day, and year, holds significance in the book as the answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything. Musk expressed his belief that once we know the right questions to ask, finding answers becomes easier.

Interestingly, Musk had already registered a firm named X.AI Corp in March, with himself as the sole director and Jared Birchall from Musk’s family office as a secretary. The company’s official Twitter account went live in May, managing to stay under the radar. Several founding members of xAI possess expertise in large language models, including researchers from DeepMind and Google Brain.

Despite Musk’s previous criticisms of AI, he has unveiled plans for a new bot product called “TruthGPT,” which he believes will offer an alternative to Microsoft and Google. The aim is to mitigate the left-wing bias often associated with AI language models like ChatGPT. Musk has been vocal about his concerns regarding AI safety and has taken action by signing open letters calling for risk assessment and caution. He has even voiced his disappointment in Larry Page, co-founder of Google, for not taking AI safety seriously.

Notably, xAI is not Musk’s first foray into the AI industry. He co-founded OpenAI in 2015 but stepped down from the company’s board in 2018 due to his focus on Tesla and SpaceX. Nevertheless, his commitment to understanding the universe and his persistent warnings about the potential dangers of AI demonstrate his unwavering dedication to pushing the boundaries of technology.
