Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, surprised the world on Wednesday with the announcement of his latest venture, a groundbreaking artificial intelligence firm called xAI.
While details about the firm are scarce, the company’s website states that the goal of xAI is to uncover the fundamental truths of the universe.
Musk took to Twitter to share the news, tweeting, “Announcing formation of @xAI to understand reality.”
xAI, in its first tweet, posed an intriguing question: “What are the most fundamental unanswered questions?”
The team behind xAI consists of 12 members, including Musk himself.
The company’s website also revealed an exciting opportunity for people to engage with the team. During a Twitter Spaces chat on Wednesday at 7 p.m. EST, individuals can meet the members of xAI and ask questions alongside Representative Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) and Representative Mike Gallagher (R-Wis.), who have a keen interest in AI’s potential benefits and risks.
Lawmakers’ growing curiosity about emerging technology is reflected in their recent first-ever classified briefing on artificial intelligence.
“AI has this extraordinary potential to make our lives better,” said Senator John Kennedy (R-La.) after the briefing. “If it doesn’t kill us first.”
In an insightful interview with Semafor in April, Representative Khanna expressed the need for proper antitrust regulation around AI to ensure its positive aspects are not undermined.
Khanna also highlighted his willingness to engage with Musk, despite their occasional disagreements over the entrepreneur’s promotion of right-wing voices and conspiracies on Twitter.
“I’ve always engaged with him, and I think he’s a brilliant entrepreneur,” Khanna shared. “But that doesn’t mean I don’t let him know I think he does things that are wrong, and I disagree with him. But I engage with him.”
While Musk has now entered the AI race, he has also been vocal about the potential risks AI poses to humanity.
According to Representative Gallagher, speaking to Bloomberg, Musk is considered a leading figure among those who advocate for caution and pausing AI development due to existential risks.
