General Motors (GM) has followed Ford in adopting Tesla’s North American charging plug standard. As part of the deal, GM electric-vehicle drivers will gain access to the Tesla Supercharger network, allowing three of the leading EV sellers in North America to agree on a charging hardware standard. The announcement was made by GM CEO Mary Barra and Tesla chief Elon Musk during a Twitter Spaces event, with both companies’ shares rising by 4% after the announcement. The decision has significant implications for both commercial and public policy, as the Biden administration made the adoption of the rival “combined charging system” an eligibility requirement for subsidies for new charging stations. The alliance among Tesla, Ford, and GM puts pressure on other automakers and independent charging network operators that had previously adopted the CCS standard. Meanwhile, companies like ChargePoint and EVgo saw their shares drop more than 4% in after-hours trading on Thursday.
