Elon Musk is determined to address an ongoing issue with Apple’s App Store. He plans to personally reach out to Apple CEO Tim Cook to discuss reducing the 30% fee that app developers are charged when they make money through the platform. Musk, who recently renamed Twitter to X, is frustrated with the perceived “hidden tax” imposed by Apple. In a post on his X account, Musk stated, “Apple does take 30%, but I will speak with @tim_cook and see if that can be adjusted to be just 30% of what 𝕏 keeps in order to maximize what creators receive.”
Musk further urged X users to support creators on the platform by subscribing to their content. He emphasized the impact even a few hundred dollars a month can have on creators living in challenging circumstances. Musk, the tech mogul behind Tesla and X, expressed his desire for a face-to-face meeting with Apple CEO Tim Cook.
In addition, Musk announced that X would incentivize creators to charge users for subscriptions. He informed users that X would no longer retain any percentage of the subscription revenue. Instead, X would keep nothing forever until creators earn over $100,000, at which point X would retain 10%.
This is not the first time Musk has criticized Apple’s practices. Last year, he referred to Apple’s 30% fee as a “hidden tax on the Internet” and even contemplated a confrontation with Apple. He argued that the App Store fee was exorbitantly high.
Musk is not alone in his critique of Apple. Other tech executives, such as Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, have voiced their concerns about the 30% fee. Zuckerberg stated that when Facebook introduces a revenue share for creators, it will be lower than Apple’s 30% cut.
It is worth noting that Musk and Cook have had previous interactions. They met after Musk accused Cook of threatening to block Twitter from the App Store. Musk later clarified that Apple had never actually considered such action, attributing the misunderstanding to miscommunication.
The Department of Justice also launched an antitrust investigation into Apple’s App Store policies, including allegations of anti-competitive practices. The investigation is focused on whether Apple’s treatment of third-party apps favors its own software products over those developed by other companies.
Overall, Elon Musk aims to address the issue of Apple’s 30% fee on behalf of app developers and maximize the revenue creators receive from their work on X.
