Elon Musk plans to eliminate Twitter’s block feature on X.

Elon Musk announced on Friday that X (formerly known as Twitter) will significantly limit its block function, removing a feature that has long been seen as a defense against online harassment.

In a series of tweets, Musk expressed his belief that the block function is illogical and stated that it will be deleted as a feature, except for direct messages (DMs). This came in response to a question from Tesla Owners Silicon Valley, who asked about the difference between blocking and muting accounts.

Blocking a user on X prevents them from interacting with an account, such as seeing, quoting, or addressing tweets directly. Muting an account, on the other hand, prevents a user from seeing the muted account’s posts without the account knowing they have been muted.

It is unknown when this change will take effect or if it can be implemented without violating the terms of service of app stores like Apple and Google, which require blocking functionality.

However, Eva Galperin, director of cybersecurity at the Electronic Frontier Foundation, believes Musk will not follow through with this change. She stated, “If your app hosts user-created content, you need to give them the ability to block abusive users.”

X has not responded to requests for comment, and neither have Google and Apple.

Some users voiced concerns over Musk’s decision, expressing that limiting the block function could lead to further harassment on a platform already struggling to address abuse.

Historian Tanja Bueltmann tweeted, “The removal of the block function would effectively make harassment an official feature of Twitter/X, taking away what is the only setting that can reduce impact. It is an extremely ignorant and privileged perspective to think that blocking makes no sense.”

The Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum stated that they use the block feature to prevent antisemitic replies on tweets commemorating victims of the concentration camp.

Musk has made significant changes to the platform since acquiring it for $44 billion, including the restoration of previously banned accounts, reducing trust and safety staffing, and dissolving a safety council. These
