Elon Musk Lifts Twitter Ban, Prompting Kanye West to Share ‘Shalom’

Mr. West recently posted on Twitter, saying, “Testing, testing. Seeing if my Twitter is unblocked.” His initial post received a warm response from Mr. Musk, who said, “Don’t kill what you hate. Save what you love.”

Mr. Musk, who acquired Twitter in a $44 billion deal, has been trying to relax moderation controls on the platform. The Tesla billionaire has expressed his desire to promote free speech and has questioned previous decisions to ban accounts.

Despite Mr. West repeatedly making what appear to be anti-Semitic comments in interviews and defending his remarks, his account has been reinstated. The rapper, legally known as Ye, lost a lucrative deal with sportswear brand Adidas due to his comments. His Yeezy trainers brand, which brought in hundreds of millions of dollars annually for the German fashion company and contributed to Mr. West’s billionaire status, was affected.

Adidas has stated that it “does not tolerate anti-Semitism or any other form of hate speech.”

Mr. Musk’s move to unblock several high-profile accounts may raise concerns among advertisers, who worry about the potential impact on their brands.

Originally, Mr. Trump was blocked from Twitter after seemingly justifying the violent storming of Capitol Hill on January 6th and disputing the results of the US Presidential election.

Mr. Musk appeared to overturn Mr. Trump’s ban by hosting a poll on his Twitter page, asking users to vote on whether the ban should be lifted.

Jonathan Greenblatt, the CEO of the US civil rights group the Anti-Defamation League, commented, “For Elon Musk to allow Donald [Trump] on Twitter, seemingly after a brief poll, shows that he isn’t remotely serious about safeguarding the platform from hate, harassment, and misinformation.”

Meanwhile, Mr. West has plans to acquire Parler, a social networking rival to Twitter that is popular among right-wing figures in the US. Parler positions itself as a company dedicated to protecting online free expression.
