In a tweet on Monday, Musk accused the civil rights group of trying to damage X by falsely labeling him as anti-Semitic. He also claimed that the significant decrease in X’s advertising revenue since he took over the platform in October 2022 was primarily due to pressure from the ADL. Musk warned that if this continued, he would file a defamation lawsuit against the ADL, ironically known as the “Anti-Defamation” League.
Musk’s threat came amidst a trending campaign on X called #BanTheADL, which called for the removal of the ADL’s account on X. Musk engaged with this campaign by asking his followers if he should run a poll on the matter. While the ADL normally doesn’t comment on legal threats, they responded to the campaign by stating that they were unsurprised but undeterred by the coordinated attack from antisemites, white supremacists, conspiracy theorists, and other trolls.
The ADL has previously raised concerns about an increase in bullying and antisemitic posts on X following Musk’s acquisition of the social network. Musk reinstated accounts such as Babylon Bee and Andrew Tate, which were previously banned for violating hate speech policies. The ADL also highlighted a rollback of rules that removed hateful content on the platform, which they believe contributed to the rise in online harassment and antisemitism on X.
Musk clarified in a tweet that he supports free speech but is against any form of anti-Semitism. This isn’t the first time X has faced criticism from advocacy groups. In July, they filed a lawsuit against the Center for Countering Digital Hate, alleging that the organization engaged in a scare campaign to drive advertisers away from X.
