Owner Elon Musk threatens to sue the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) for a staggering $22 billion. Musk accuses the civil rights group of driving away advertisers since purchasing the social media site, which he now owns. In a tweetstorm, Musk claims that the ADL is falsely accusing him and the site, formerly known as Twitter, of being anti-Semitic in an attempt to shut it down. He states that a defamation lawsuit is necessary to clear the platform’s name. Musk attributes a 60% drop in advertising revenue to the ADL, holding them responsible for most of the financial loss.
Musk’s comments come in response to a fellow X user questioning the ADL’s role in the devaluation of the company. In his reply, Musk states that even giving them the maximum benefit of the doubt, the ADL is responsible for at least 10% of the devaluation, which amounts to around $4 billion. He further claims that full communication discovery between the ADL and advertisers will reveal the entire story.
REUTERS attempted to contact Musk’s site to inquire about the lawsuit but received an autoreply indicating that they will respond at a later time. The ADL refrains from commenting on the threat made by Musk.
Elon Musk’s acquisition of the site and his failure to take action against hate speech have drawn criticism from the ADL. The organization accuses him of allowing the platform to continue spreading antisemitism. Musk himself notes the irony of the situation and asserts that false accusations of antisemitism are aimed at killing the platform.
The ADL recently discussed conduct policy violations with X’s CEO Linda Yaccarino, leading to a campaign to ban the ADL. Musk amplified the campaign by suggesting a poll to determine its fate. This sparked controversy, prompting Musk to declare his support for free speech while condemning antisemitism.
In response to the campaign against them, the ADL remains unfazed. They affirm their commitment to fighting hate in all forms and ensuring the safety of marginalized groups. The organization discovered that several banned accounts were reinstated, although they did not frequently post explicit antisemitic content. They found traces of antisemitic tropes and conspiracy theories among their followers.
The ADL accused X of not enforcing its content moderation policies in another report released earlier this year. Musk has also initiated a lawsuit against the Center for Countering Digital Hate for damaging X’s relationship with advertisers. Despite claims that X has improved its hate speech moderation, several major advertisers, including Audi and Pfizer, have boycotted the platform since Musk took ownership. The social media site’s value has also dropped significantly according to a valuation report from Fidelity.
